Ruger SR556

The Ruger SR 556 series is Rugers way of jumping in on the AR-15 bandwagon in style. The rifles are a great quality and have very few drawbacks. In their words “Employing a patent-pending, chrome-plated, two-stage piston driven operating system that provides the user with a cleaner, cooler running, reliable firearm that is truly state-of-the-art.” They provide a great number of accessories on some models, stripped down models, and upper receivers.

The standard series of the SR556 come with everything but the kitchen sink. Out of the bag, that comes with it, you get three black Magpul pmags, Troy front and back BUIS, Troy quad rails, Troy rail cover panels, Hogue grip, collapsible stock, and their chrome bolt and bolt carrier group. Coming out at 8 pounds it is a bit on the heavy side. Ruger does offer two lighter carbine models in this category called the SR556C with a fluted barrel and the S556CLA which has a lighter and different style hand guard similar to the viking tactics rail. The E model also has the lighter hand guards without the Troy BUIS and the Hogue grip for a cheaper package. The upper receivers offered are in the rifle and carbine length models with the standard Troy accessories as well as a model chambered in 6.8 SPC.

All in all it is a great package and a quality product. I have found that it does not feed steel cased ammo very well at all though. That being said the two stage piston system blows away a direct impingement system. All of the parts are chrome lined and keep the rifle cool and mostly clean. I found that cleaning the piston is the only difficult part wiping the rest clean with a rag.
